Silica was initially introduced as a filler in elastomers back in the 1950s, initially finding its application in shoe soles. As the 1970s approached, its usage expanded rapidly, with silica being experimented with in various rubber products such as heavy truck tires, passenger tires, engine mounts, and gaskets. This broadening application was spurred by accumulating evidence showcasing its capacity to enhance adhesion, reduce heat generation, and bolster tear resistance. It wasn't until the early 1990s that Michelin successfully demonstrated, in a commercially viable manner, that the combination of precipitated silica and silane in a tire's tread composition led to reduced rolling resistance and improved wet traction.
