According to a report on Cabot Corporation's official website, the recycling and repurposing of discarded tires are increasingly becoming a key focus in the global tire industry. Cabot Corporation unveiled a specialized presentation on their latest product, STERLING® SO-RC110, a recycled semi-reinforcing carbon black, at the 2023 International Rubber Conference (IRC 2023). This particular carbon black falls under the ASTM N550 category and is a result of Cabot's development efforts within the EVOLVE® sustainable technology platform, incorporating 10% recycled carbon black (rCB) sourced from discarded tires.
Employing a blending pelletization technique, STERLING® SO-RC110 integrates certified recycled carbon black from the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification organization (ISCC PLUS) into the traditional STERLING® SO (Cabot's N550 carbon black brand). This innovative approach produces a recycled product equivalent to ASTM N550 carbon black, maintaining substantial consistency in rubber properties, product quality, and processing.
As outlined in the technical data, a comparison was made between the recycled semi-reinforcing carbon black STERLING® SO-RC110 and regular STERLING SO carbon black in a basic formulation of natural rubber/solution styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) 50/50 for sidewall rubber, with no adjustments made to other compounding agents. Particularly suitable for scenarios requiring an enhancement of sustainable components without compromising rubber performance, STERLING® SO-RC110 finds applications in all sectors utilizing ASTM N550 carbon black. This includes sidewall and under-tread rubber for passenger and light truck tires, as well as in industrial rubber products such as extruded items (e.g., hoses and shaped sealing gaskets), engine mountings, belt inner liners, and molded rubber products or components, among others.
